After having an afro in the 70s and 80s i decided to perm my hair. Have now done it for a good while and I am now going grey and have decided not to continue torturing myself further with chemicals and hair dyes. I told myself that that $150 charge per salon visit could be put to better use. I was also tired of sitting around a hairdressing salon for 4-6 hrs each visit. On my last visit she did not have the sensitive perm i normally use and failed to tell me and i ended up with some sores in my scalp. So that was the final straw.

On top of that my guy has been hounding me to go natural (go figure) as he has this awesome love for black women. Soooo, i am finally taking the plunge.

As it stands now, when i don’t go to the salon and am too lazy to style my hair myself i usually wash, condition, air dry and then blow out lightly, braid, comb out and then put it into a wavy french roll. I think that if you are having an issue styling your hair, you can always pin it up and you will still look fab. So, as one of my favorite Reggae group – Steel Pulse = sings its “back to my roots.”. This is going to be my mantra going forward.

You may have seen this question before but uhm. When transitioing from permed hair to natural hair does your hair still do the same thing? I had been getting perms as needed since I was like 5. It’s really bad I know but my auntie was young. I have been trying to transition to natural hair but it’s been fairly dificult. I don’t want to have to do flat twist in my hair every night it gets tiresome.

Did you read this page? https://napturallycurly.com/transitioning-from-relaxed-to-natural-hair/natural-hair-transition-guide/ This will give you some guidance. Do you need help on styling? I wasn’t sure what you meant by where to begin.

Hello you have been my inspiration to go on with my napturally curly journey! Thank you sooooo much. I invite others to your site because I think you are thorough and honest and I feel like I’m not alone as you too started at the bottom. Keep up the great work!

I have been natural now for 1 yr 4months. I cut some ends b/c I’m so over the two textures. I know I need to go to my hairdresser for a proper trim. I’m just buying time for length,

I recently started transitioning and I am having problems with trying to keep a hairstyle. I have about an inch of new growth and the rest of my hair still have perm and I do not want to do the big chop. I have been trying the flat twist but its not coming out right. I love using shea moisture products because it keeps my hair soft and manageable. Please advise 🙂
I love your website and it has been very helpful especially with the pre poo and deep conditioning.

I am trying to transition, it’s been approximately 3 or 4 months since my last perm. I rolled set my hair every night, surely there has to be a better way. I am going to the islands on vacation next month I need suggestions for my hair….please help.

      Hi Adrienne

Honestly if I was transitioning and going on VC, I’d get some box braids or some kind of carefree style. Managing two textures can be work and you don’t want to have to worry about your hair while you are enjoying your vacation. Just make sure you don’t get them done too tight.

I never had to roll my hair every night. Are you using perm rods to set your hair when it’s wet? If you use the small ones, they should last 4-6 days. Have you watched my rod set video? https://napturallycurly.com/2010/11/how-to-make-a-rod-set-last/

Love all the styles…with the holidays I have put the rods away for a rest and now I have marley twist….where can I find tips on the website for itchy scalp due to the fact that I can’t pre-poo, etc. Please help!!!!
