Why Your Crown is Damaged and How to Grow it Back

As long as you’ve ruled out any medical reasons for hair damage, the cause of crown breakage/thinning is likely due to a difference in hair porosity.

Porosity refers to how well your hair holds moisture.

Low porosity hair does not absorb water/moisture well. It just sits on top and doesn’t penetrate.

High porosity hair has too many holes and the water escapes quickly.

Both can leave your hair feeling dry, brittle and you may notice excessive breakage.

Why The Porosity of Your Crown is Different

Since the crown is located at the top of our heads, it gets exposed to more sun on a regular basis. If you live in warmer climates and are out in the sun a lot, you could be frying your crown and increasing the porosity from low/normal to high.

High porosity hair is normally caused by damage from curling irons, blow dryers and flat irons. But the sun generates heat too, and often times has a similar drying effect on the hair.

And if you aren’t replenishing moisture frequently, it will be more prone to breakage.

Your crown may also be the thickest and or kinkiest part of your hair. So if it’s kinky AND dry, that’s a recipe for breakage if you aren’t moisturizing and being careful when it comes to detangling your hair.

How to Protect Your Crown & Grow Your Hair Back

1. Always shampoo your hair in sections and do your crown separately
2. Detangle with your fingers and use lots of conditioner
3. Do hot oil treatments to nourish your scalp and hair
4. Avoid styling with heat as much as possible
5. Be gentle when manipulating the crown during styling
6. Massage Jamaican Black Castor Oil in your scalp at night. This tonic has a reputation for thickening damaged hair.
7. Perform gentle scalp massages 15 minutes per day
8. Wear lots of low manipulation styles (twists, rod sets, pin-ups, etc.)
