Many commercial brands of gel dry your hair out and contain chemicals that aren’t really good for your body and hair.
I recommend making your own flaxseed gel. It’s incredibly cheap to make because you only need to buy one ingredient and that is flaxseeds! The seeds last forever and you only need a small amount to make it.

Other Hair Gel Recommendations
So if you’re not into the whole DIY scene, then here are some great gels you can buy.
Original Sprout – This gel is 100% natural, but it has a very light hold. Not great for kinkier/thicker hair types, but would be great for straighter hair and it’s gentle enough for babies.
Original Moxie Oasis Moisture Gel – This is not your typical slick-down-your-hair gel. It’s really best for setting the hair, waves and twists on kinky hair.
In other words, it has a lighter hold. I use it on my flat twists to keep the hairs in place. And when you take your twists down, your hair will be soooooo soft and wavy!
Kinky Curly Curling Custard – This can be used on all types of hair, but it has a very strong hold! If you use too much, your hair will be crunchy with residue. It smells incredibly good because it contains marshmallow root. The scent is very light, but pleasant.
It’s best to apply this on your hair when it’s freshly shampooed and wet.
Aloe Vera Gel – AVG is very, very moisturizing. It can be used along with your setting products, and is good for use after shampooing. Not only is it wonderful for your hair, but it’s useful for burns, insect bites, blisters and more.
Natural Hair Gel for Kinkier Hair Types (Not 100% Natural)
IC Fantasia – This gel does not contain any alcohol so it doesn’t dry your hair out as much and there is no flaking.
ECO Styler – This is probably THE most popular hair gel for women with natural, kinky hair. It is super cheap at Sally’s Beauty Supply and the large jar will last forever! The Olive and Argon are my favorites.
Giovanni Styling Gel – If you need a very strong hold, then this is the gel for you. Great for frizzy hair and edges.
IMPORTANT TIP FOR KINKY HAIR:
Before applying gel to your hair, make sure it’s properly moisturized. That will keep your hair from drying out so much.
And even though many of these gel brands say “no flaking”, if you continue to pile gel onto the hair, it will flake after a few days. So it’s important to shampoo your hair regularly if you apply a lot of gel.
Also be careful with your edges because they are the most delicate part of the hair. If you are going to brush your hair with the gel, use a soft bristle boar brush.
To keep your edges down, tie a silk scarf around your head for 15-20 minutes after applying the gel. Your edges will set and remain in place longer.
