If you’re new to the natural hair game, buying products can be overwhelming. How do you know which ones are really great?
Of course everyone’s hair responds to products differently, but you should feel some comfort knowing that the following products are the most popular products/brands in the natural hair space based on sales volume and reviews online.
There’s a little something for every kind of hair type and situation.
So here we go…
As I Am CoWash
Cowashing is the process of washing your hair with conditioner only. It keeps your hair from getting stripped (dry) and minimizes breakage. Many naturals hardly ever use shampoo because they get such tremendous benefits from cowashing.
Tip: If you do decide to cowash regularly, it’s a good idea to use a clarifying shampoo every so often (4-6 weeks) to fully cleanse the hair, scalp and pores.
Kinky Curly Curling Custard
I’m such a fan of this company because they ONLY use natural ingredients. There are never any sulfates in their shampoos (a drying substance) and they use earthy ingredients like marshmallow root and more.
Their Kinky Curly Curling Custard is their most popular product because it defines curls very well and is best used when hair is soaking wet and squeaky clean.
I would buy this offline at Target or Walgreens because you get the best deal.
Shea Moisture Products
This is no doubt one of the most popular brands for natural hair, and they are affordable.
They make products for every step of your regimen. It’s always great to use the same product line for multiple steps in your routine (shampooing, conditioning, leave-in) because of how well the products often work together.
My favorite is their Deep Treatment Masque. It is soooooooooooooooo good for dry, brittle hair. I put it on after shampooing and let it sit under a plastic cap for at least 30 minutes. It’s a great deep conditioning treatment.
Oyin Handmade
This company was birthed by a husband and wife team who started making products right out of their kitchen.
Oyin is another great group of products that I started using during my transition to natural hair. Their Burnt Sugar Pomade is wonderful for twists and smells delicious!
If you need a light leave-in in the summer, use the Honey Hemp. This product has honey (humectant) so it shouldn’t be used in the colder months. The Whipped Pudding is wonderful for dry, frizzy hair.
Curls
This line has products for many different ethnicities. So whether your hair is kinky, frizzy, curly or wavy, there’s something for you!
I’ve never used any of their shampoos or conditioners, but I like their styling products because they are very moisturizing. Try the Curl Souffle if you have frizzy/dry hair.
Karen’s Body Beautiful
This award-winning line has so many different products. They even have a transitioning kit if you are just starting your journey to natural hair.
I’ve never used their products myself but when I started my journey it seemed every natural on YouTube was singing the praises of Karen’s products.
Jane Carter
These products don’t weigh your hair down and they smell so good!
If you have dry scalp, try the scalp repair. It’s soooo soothing!
If your hair needs nourishment and feels dry, their Nourish and Shine is another goody. It has a very strong mango/citrus smell that I love. But if you aren’t into that scent then you may want to skip it for that reason.
