When my hair is out, it usually reaches my chin. However when I get my two strand twists done it barely goes beneath my ear. Why is this?

When I was 13, my mom put a perm in my hair twice. I never wanted one, but I didn’t know how to do my own hair and her hands were hurting so this is what she did. The perm broke my hair off. Everyone was telling me to cut my hair, that was how to get the perm out. But I didn’t listen to them, because I think I heard or saw somewhere that you can grow out of it. I believe I grew out of it a long time ago. I’m 18 now. Ever since, I have been trying different products and hairstyles to try and grow my hair back, but nothing seemed to work until my mom remembered what she used on my hair when I was young. So, I have the two products she used, plus an extra moisturizing conditioner, and now I am on a search to learn what to do. I camr across stretching. I washed my hair two days ago, and yesterday, I greased it with vaseline, twisted my hair for a few hours, then took them out while combing the curls out. My hair was big. I was shocked. I’m looking for the best method for me, and how much I should do it. Should I do it with my conditioner in my hair? How frequently? Every night? My common hairstyle these days is two french braids in the front, going back into a ponytail. So, idk. I guess I am just looking for some guidance

It sounds like the ends to her hair are damaged from the heat. I use a curl activator in my hair to get my curls to pop, but if it’s heat damaged it’s just gonna look like straight almost like a transitioning phase.

You can section your hair into 6-8 sections and band each one. Take each section at a time and put a rubber band at the top, one in the middle, and one at the end of your hair. You’ll look crazy but it will stretch your hair while it dries. Then when your hair is dry twist your hair. You will get more length.

Hi Norell, you can stretch your hair by putting it into big twists and letting it air dry and then style. That’s what I do and it makes a big difference.

      HI Gholdya

As soon as you get out of the shower, put your hair in big twists or stretch it by banding it. In other words, put a ponytail holder on one section at the top, then put another in the middle and one on the end. Do this all over. Let your hair dry stretched. Then style your hair after it is dry and stretched. When I wear twists, I do this to get more length.

Help, I haven’t had a perm in over five months. My problem is I washed and deep treatment condition my hair.I used Shea Moisture,Curly Buttercream to curly my very damp hair, overnight to dry. My hair looked nappy around the edges and was hard the following day looking nappy. Please tell me what I need to do and what I need to use. The products that I used were not cheap. Thanks

I wonder if the deep conditioner you used was still on your hair. Miss Jessie’s products hate mixing with other products and if there is any residue it could leave build up and make your hair hard. Also Miss Jessie’s is not natural so maybe your hair is reacting to some of the ingredients.

      Hi Tearra

I always say, if I I can learn anyone can. I have never been a hair person in terms of doing hair. So I just kept trying new things. I started with rod sets, then learned how to flat twist. Then I combined those two techniques for other styles. I wore lots of hats/caps, etc.

When you do twist outs what happens?

Your hair has gotten so long since you big chopped. You look great!!! I swear by this website and I come back and read it when I need a natural hair pick me up. (I’m 6 months into my transition) I’m currently dealing with breakage and trying to slow it down, but I’m learning. πŸ™‚
Thanks so much for all your videos and information. They are a big help and an inspiration.

It’s amazing to see the length of your hair. It’s healthy and so thick. I love your tips. Can you tell me what to do for thicker hair, especially around the edges and crown of my head. As we get older, hair tends to thin for many reason. My hair thinned when I had a perm, now over two years; and due to hormonal changes. I currently use a spray with a mixture of good healthy oils. It has helped to deminish breakage and strengthen my hair but I’m not seeing my hair get thicker. Any recommendations?

Have you tried scalp massages and rubbing castor oil into your hair? Massages stimulate blood vessels and can encourage optimal growth/thickness. Castor oil has been known to help thicken hair. A lot of people use it on their eyebrows at night.

      Hi Lisa,

I tried going natural last year and it was a diaster. I already had extensive damage from relaxing to often. When I finally decided to see a professional, she told me my hair was so damaged. I should either do the big chop, or relax again. i relaxed again and got my damaged tresses cut. This was 10/11.Since, i have tried to be cautious only relaxing every 2 months and keeping my hair moisturized. I am now in tree braids that I plan on wearing until August.I had tree braids put in in april and took them down and had them put in again. In between, i got my hair trimmed and deep conditioned. I could tell the difference from not relaxing. My hair seemed healthier and thicker.when I remove my braids in august , I will be 6 months post relaxer. I do not want to relax again. Is it possible to wear natural hair straight and your hair be healthy? I have a girlfriend who successfully transitioned getting her hair flat ironed and blow dried every 2 weeks. I want the best of both worlds. No relaxer, but straight hair. Advice please! Thank you.

        Hi Bobbie,

My best friend has been relaxer free for almost two years and she just gets her hair straightened professionally. She did the same as your friend and her hair is longer than it’s ever been. The only downside to getting it straightened regularly is you will lose your curl pattern. So if you ever want to wear twists or some kind of natural style, your ends will be straight. My friend can’t do twists or a twist out unless she rods the ends because all the heat will eventually cause your hair to stop curling.

But if that’s not a problem and you plan to keep getting it flat ironed then I wouldn’t worry about it. So as long as you go to someone who knows how to handle natural hair and uses a heat protectant, I say go for it. I have no experience with this though because I have never worn my hair straight since I stopped relaxing.
