Whew! Time flies. Can’t believe I’ve been natural for two months already.
A lot of people on YouTube have been asking me about the products I use post transition, so I thought I’d share them on my blog as well.
And if you’d rather read than watch, I’ve listed the products below the video.
Shampoo & Conditioning
Kinky Curly’s Come Clean (shampoo) and Knot Today (conditioner)
Leave-in Conditioner
Oyin Handmade’s Honey Hemp
Deep Conditioner
Organics Olive Oil Replenisher
Tip: If you don’t like sitting under the dryer when you deep condition, soak a wash cloth or hand towel in very warm water and wring it out. Place it on your hair and put on a plastic cap. Leave on for at least 30 minutes.
The plastic cap will trap in the heat from the cloth and condition your hair.
Daily Moisturizer/Sealants
Natural oil mix (castor, olive, jojoba, vitamin E, coconut, sweet almond oil)

Thank you for the dry hair twist-out video. I have 2c hair and just beginning to learn how to properly care for it at home. Dumb question but ?? After moisturizing, then do you apply curl or twist out foam? I’ll keep following your posts!
lisa says
Yes, you apply the twisting cream after moisturizer.

Greetings Lisa,
I am so happy I found your site. My hair was relaxed at an early age. I’ve always believed if I had the proper knowledge/education on how to maintain/noursih my kinky hair as a child I would’ve never received a relaxer. Your site will make transitioning a lot easier for me. I appreciate you took the time to provide descriptions, videos , products and definitions. I still trying to learn all the natural terms.
I’m 2 months into transitioning and it’s been quite the journey getting to know my hair.
. I’m currently using Wen by Chanz Dean and Carol Daughters hair products. I have thick coarse hair. I currently applies heat daily with extreme caution.( using protectants serums and Paul Micthell Ion styling tools 360 temp) My roots/edges are nappy, however the rest of my hair is straight.. ( I can notice the two textures) It’s becoming diffiuclt to use a comb. I noticed on another forum it stated while transitioning not to use combs three months in. Is there a reason why?
I’ve decided to try protective styles for my third month..
I get discouraged but You and other naturals always gives me HOPE! I believe I’m on the right path.
This is going to be a great journey for me.

Hey Rae!
Girl stay strong and I’m glad this site could provide the inspiration you needed! Thanks for visiting.
Applying heat will definitely dry out your hair. I would strongly recommend not doing that even with caution — especially when transitioning because your hair will get weaker anyway so adding heat will only make the problem worse. Have you ever considered doing flexirod or rod sets instead of using heat? That’s what I did for most of my transition.
Rae says
Hey Lisa!
Yes , I have considered flexirods/ rod sets. I’m trying to master applying them as you do so.
I have an appointment scheduled for the time being though.
Today after I conditioned my hair with Olive Oil replenshing conditioner. I allowed my hair to air dry, finger combed then styled. I applied heat but only to my ends not the entire strand of hair.
I was amazed at how full/ soft my hair was not applying heat to the entire strand.
I will continue to ween myself from applying heat to my hair.
Thanks for your tips and support.

Hi,
I’ve been without a relaxer for approximately 17 months but I’ve been getting blow outs twice a month since then. I have never tried a natural hairs style such as a flat twist set or anything. I’m so lost when it comes to those types of hairs styles. Now that I’m interested in washing and conditioning my own hair as opposed to continuing going to the salon, I don’t know where to start with shampoos, conditioners, oils, etc… for natural hair. Please help!!!!! my hair is beyond shoulder length and it tangles bad. I also have dandruff issues. *sigh*
lisa says
Hi Tanisha
As far as products, you just have to experiment. I didn’t know anything either but I just researched other sites and took suggestions. Just know that what works for my hair may not work for yours. Try to find shampoos that re sulfate free like the Giovanni brand (Walmart). Get a good moisturizer like something from the Shea Moisture line (Walgreens).
As far as tangling, I would recommend shampooing your hair in sections and detangling each section with conditioner (cheap rinse out) before getting into the shower. This makes all the difference in the world. When you shampoo each section at a time and detangle before you get into the shower it makes a big difference.
As far as dandruff try massaging jojoba oil with a couple of drops of tea tree oil into your scalp an hour before shampooing

I have literraly JUST decided to begin the transition process to my natural hair. I too, will be transitioning without the BIg Chop. I must say, I completely submersed myself into all the youtube videos, and I am so overwhelmed. However, coming across your website was a breath of fresh air! All of your thoughts are oganized and very helpful. You’ve given me even more inspiration to go forward with the transition. It’s also really great to be able to READ, in oppose to sitting and watching someone talk for 10 minutes, lol! Thanks for providing us transitioners with your advise and recommendations. I am now a regular to your website!

Hello Lisa, I did my big chop about a week ago. I tried to transition for 6 months but decided to get it over with. I am having the hardest time keeping moisture in my hair. I have tried coconut oil, castor, jojoba, rosemary, and olive oil, along with shea butter, I have tried the bagggy method twice and its still dry and hard. I can’t figure my hair type I guess its abt a 4a or something idk. Do you think I should give it more time to adjust, or is there something special I should try? I am wearing a twa, I used Shea Moisture shampoo and conditioner (leave in) and the curl enhancing. Today I did a cowash and olive oil the curls were really pretty and defined but it still felt dry and looked dull, I have the worst hair color its like a weird brown and my friendly grays are greeting everyone (lol). Thanks for any help.

Hi Lisa,
My last perm is now 5 weeks old. I read your transitioning guide. I’m not ready to let go of my stylist just yet. I’m too scared to try to style my own hair. My stylist is telling me not to use natural hair products yet. I see my stylist every two weeks. I’ve been wearing protective styles (flat twists in the front and rod set in the back) for a couple of weeks.
My scalp has started to itch and not sure what I should use as a moisturizer.
Your thoughts?

Deidra says
And, what coconut oil do you use/recommend? (liquid?)
Deidra says
Ms. Lisa! What do you use to give your hair “sheen” or “shine” DURING the styling process? Or, what do you use on the finished product? Do your “daily moisture” oils do this for you? Thanks!
lisa says
I don’t do anything extra usually. Whatever product I use just tends to help give my hair sheen. I do rinse my hair in cold water and do an apple cider vinegar/water rinse sometimes which can help seal the cuticle and provide more sheen. I don’t always do the vinegar but I always rinse in cold water to close the cuticle.
I used up all my coconut oil and haven’t bought any since. I can’t remember the name but it was from Whole Foods. The two oils I use the most are olive oil (any brand) and Castor oil (HomeHealth)
sh says
Do you use Daily Moisturizer mixture – (castor, olive, jojoba, vitamin E, coconut, sweet almond oil) everyday? Do you add water to this mixture?
Thanks
lisa says
Yes, about every other day or every 3 days I use an essential oils mixture containing mostly castor and jojoba oil. Sometimes I add water if my hair feels a little dry but I spritz it on my hair separately. I don’t add it to the mixture.
