I just hit my 1 year transition mark so I thought I’d do a quick reflection of the styles I wore over the past year.

Hi Lisa,
I had my last relaxed on 7/13 & have decided to transition to natural this month. I’ve been all over the Internet searching for inspiration however there’s so much information & it tends to get confusing. Ive keep my hair in a short, shaved in the back, relaxed cut for years so the B/C doesn’t faze me. Ive decided, however, to let my hair grow out a little more before cutting it (although the shaved in the back part is already natural I guess??). The only plan that I have as of now is to get rope twists & leave them in for 6-8
weeks (hopefully). After that….. I’m not sure. Any suggestions of how to manage my hair while in this protective style and what I should do when I remove them? I’m open to all suggestions, tips & products. Thanks

When you were transitioning and you did twist outs, how did you make sure that the ends didn’t unravel? My hair is past my shoulders; my natural is 3-4 inches and it’s relaxed the rest of the way down so it’s still somewhat slick.

I put small rods on the ends of the twists.

I have been transitioning since november of last year and i am good at styling hair that is permed and straight but i have been having a couple of problems trying to get those flat twists. My hair is not really thick so it doesnt look as good as yours does.I tried the long lasting twist out and when i did the first set of twist to dry it they were so thin toward the bottom. i have to use rods or rollers to make sure they dont untwist at the ends. Do you know of anything i can do to help thicken my hair up.
lisa says
Unless your hair has been damaged, hair thickness is typically genetic. And I’m not a fan of those products that claim they will make your hair thicker. Usually they are just hype. You can dry massaging castor oil into your scalp if your hair has lost thickness, but I’m not sure if it’s possible to thicken hair that’s naturally thin. Then again, I’m no expert either. π

I just want to THANK YOU for your videos and this site. I will reach my 1 year transitionversary tomorrow and I owe it all to you. I stumbled upon one of your videos while searching YouTube and ended up watching each one of them. It had been about 3 months since I had a relaxer and was starting to have second thoughts about the whole thing. You seemed to tell my story about all of the hair damage and not having a clue about the terminology or what products to use. I took comfort in knowing that I wasn’t the only one out there clueless about going natural without wanting to cut all of my hair off. Kudos to you Lisa!

Excellent Tawnya!! I am so happy to inspire you and thanks so much for coming by to share your story. π

Lisa,
Thank you so much for the all the information. I am now 3 months into transitioning from relaxers. I have used so much of your information to stay encouraged. I will start trying to do the roller sets myself. I currently see a stylist every two weeks to wash and condition and rollerset and the off week I wash and deep condition myself. I took your advice and plan to have my hair trimmed every month. My last relaxer was August 13th 2011. My journey has just started but I am excited about it. I am a little scared but so tried of the damaged I have received from the chemical. My hair was down my back about the top of my bra. I started to experience thinning and dryness. I had planned to not do the BC. I went in and told my stylist my plan and walked out with a semi BC in October 2011. That was not my plan I was terrible upset about it. So I am about halfway into being natural. I just had a trim which removed some more of the damage hair off my head. My hair looks a lot better not as red and fried looking as before the cut. My goal is have healthy natural hair. I am thankful to have found your site through a friend. You did a great job explaining everything. Thank you so much for encouraging this newbie.

Greeting,
I thank you for having this website, becasue of you I am a year into transitioning into my natural hair. I check back here often for ideas to wear my hair and accessories to use. I orignially felt like I could only blow my hair out in order to do something with it, but now you’ve put me in the right directions. Thanks.

Hi Lisa,
I just found your website. Its wonderful! I have not had a perm since December so I have been transitioning from relaxer for almost 8 months. I have two questions for you. I moved from ATL to Texas and I noticed that my hair is much harder to manage in Texas (felt dryer, firzzer) even when I had a relaxer I assume b/c of the humidity. This has maintained even with my natural hair growth. I feel like my hair is dry. I have tried twisting my hair and then taking it out for a wavy look. Initially, it looks great, but that style only lasts for a day or two max. Any suggestions? The next question I have is what are the measurements for the pro poo (?) mix you use. I know you said honey, olive oil, and conditioner, but how much of each do you use. Thanks.
Jambi

Hey Jambi, I can relate. I’m in Texas too so I know what you mean. One thing I had to come to terms with is my hair just frizzes easily and there isn’t really anything you can do to change your natural texture very much. If your hair is naturally frizzy it will want to revert. When doing your twists you can try to make them smaller and leave them in as long as you can. The longer I leave them in, the longer the style will last.
I’ve found that Aloe Vera gel, glycerin and not towel drying my hair (let it drip dry while styling) helps minimize frizz and my style will last longer. So experimenting with products can help but I too get that 2-3 day hair. That’s why I wear a lot of twists in the summer.
For my pre-poo I just eyeball it. I use about 1 part of each except for the honey. Honey can lighten your hair and it’s sticky. Good luck on your journey!

I stumbled on this site from your 2createawebsite that I’ve followed for a while for your gems of wisdom.
I was always a big fan of your intelligence, integrity, ambition and beauty.
But I just have to say that you are even more radiant with your natural hair.
I’ve come to notice something regal about afro-textured hair in its tendency to grow up and out, ie radiate, instead of fall.
When you smile in your natural shots, it’s as if you have the sun behind you.
Seriously 3:12 and 5:48 in the video blows 8:48 away.
As I watched it I thought this to myself and I had to post it because I don’t know how often you get the compliments you deserve!
Your hair complements your comeliness perfectly sister, from a brother.

What a wonderful compliment. I am truly humbled. Thank you so much, bro. I appreciate it. π

Greetings Lisa, Luv luv luv your vid’s… Thanks for the update on the 1yr. naturalversary “Friend in my head” I’ve been really dig’n your styles… I’m still not that good at twisting; but I’m really luv’n my hair.. No more creamy crack for me after 45yrs. of applications…. I’m coming up on my 1yr. transitionalversary this june 8th 2011 I’m quite excited!!! Like you. I’ve been cutting my hair as often as needed which I also found to be extremely helpful. It really did’nt bother me to cut twice a week for the 1st 3mos. Since I’ve worn my hair in an A-Line Bob for years now. So many times I just wanted to cut rite at that line of demarkcation; because I just could’nt stand the look of those damaged ends. The only thing that stopped me.. I knew I would hate it even more if I had no hair to play with. I’m so glad I stumbled onto your vid’s.. You are certainly one of my very favorites. Thanks again Lisa for all your help and encouragement. Happy Happy Hair Growing {:-)!!!

As soon as my hair grows long enough to put it on a rod or to twist it, I’m gonna try some of your suggestions. Right now it’s at a standstill. Haven’t been to the barbershop in months but I still only have a little less than an inch growth. I’ve saved your info and can’t wait to be able to wear some of your styles. Thanks Lisa!
