I used to be so concerned about achieving curl definition when I first became natural. But now I often let my strands do what they want to do.
So I found it a tad bit amusing when I received the most defined curls without even trying.
The Setup
The puff has been my go-to style for the last couple of months out of sheer laziness. It’s quick, easy and a great style if you work out because it keeps your hair off your face and neck.
So I prepared my puff as usual…
1) Shampooed and conditioned my hair (I didn’t deep condition.)
2) Twisted with medium-to-large sized twists with Miss Jessie’s Stretch Silkening Cream on wet hair (took about 40 minutes)
3) Took the twists down the next day and wore a twist out.
4) On day 3 of the twist out, I misted my hair with water and applied the old school Shea Moisture Leave in Conditioner (I seriously hope they don’t discontinue this!)
Instantly my curls began clumping together like crazy. (Mind you, I was only adding the water and product for moisture — not curl definition.)
5) I pulled my hair into a puff with a Goody band
Here is my hair on day 5 of the puff…

For the record, I took this pic fresh out of bed. The only thing I did was finger pick my curls because my hair was matted after sleeping. It is is still incredibly moisturized and I don’t think I’ll need to apply any product today.
Maintenance
The upkeep on this style is ridiculously easy. I shower with no cap (for moisture), sleep in a satin scarf or bonnet and re-apply the shea moisture in the morning.
Then I pick out the curls with my fingers and go!
Can you take a picture of the old school shea leave in moisturizer so I know what to buy?
Unfortunately I can no longer find it. I’m sooooo sad. I really like this stuff! But it shouldn’t be hard to make because it was just shea butter, water and some herbs. The key is the shea butter and water mixed together. The water moisturizes the hair and the butter locks it in and helps define your curls. So look for products that are thick and contain those two ingredients FIRST on the label.
Do you have a youtube video of this puffs?
Thank you, fobecfmg@gmail.com
I learning atot about my hair thanks to you but still I need someone that can work with me more with my nature hair like shampoo conditioner leave in conditioners curly hair I am getting overwhelmed
Hey , Lisa I have very coarse and dry hair ! I want my hair to be pretty and curly … What products and what should I use to achieve that look
Keep in mind, if your hair doesn’t have curls naturally, no product is going to give you curls. But you can enhance what you already have with “curl enhancing creams” and gels. Have you tried any of the curl enhancing products? I know the Curls line has them and so do many others. Just keep in mind you can’t make curls that your hair doesn’t have.
I wore my first puff this past week and I was so proud! Like you, I did it randomly on an old twist out and slept with a satin scarf. I did cover my hair in the shower, just because I was so in love with it I didn’t want to mess it up!
Way to go Whitni! And I love how you spell your name.
I am so glad that I found your site. As an older woman, I won’t say just how old, many times I have wondered if it is to late to go natural and if it would go well with my salt and pepper hair. Your hair is beautiful.
Thank you Myrna!
Wait so not to be the girl desperately looking for a chance of natural curls (although I am)……..does this mean cotton texture hair can have a curl pattern?
I did give it a try and I haven’t took kit down yet to see the results. I just wanted to say that your website definitely inspired to want and be a natural more. Just seeing yhe transition with you hair is just fantastic and I just love it.
Hi ,
I’ve been tensitioning for about 5months now and I just love your sight and this look do you think I would be possible to pull this look off so early on
Probably not without rodding the ends. You would definitely need perm rods to curl the ends.
I have not had a perm for 5 years but have applied heat. No heat for 3 months now. My ends are thin should I cut them off
Hi Sandy
I learned quickly that no point in trying to save thinning/breaking ends. They will eventually all break off and your hair will look so much better in various styles if you even things up.
