Brrrrr…. Now that the cold temps are officially upon us, beanies are always a great option for keeping warm and adding a bit of pizazz to your curly ‘do.
Napturally Curly Forum member, Necey, provided the inspiration by posting this thread in the forum. (You can join the forum for style inspiration and friendly fellowship here!)
This led me to a great post by Black Girl Long Hair titled, 5 Ways to Rock a Beanie on Your Natural Hair This Winter.
I was inspired by the first pic, compliments of Mz Tammy on Instagram.
So I thought I’d try my own version of this style.
I wanted to do a wash and go to get a more fuller, curly look like Mz Tammy above, but it’s too cold for all that so I did a rod set instead.
Step 1: Part Hair From Ear to Ear to Make Bangs
I actually made my section a lot bigger than I needed to because I wanted to make sure I had enough bangs.
Step 2: Set Your Bangs Using Perm Rods
The smaller the rods, the curlier the look AND the longer it will last.
I would have preferred to use more smaller rods, but didn’t have enough. So I settled for mostly the medium size.
I was out of setting products and the only thing I had that was remotely close was Hair Rules Curly Whip. I normally get mine from Ulta, but you can also buy it at Amazon.
It’s a curl-defining cream that’s best used on wet hair for wash and go’s, but it also sets the hair pretty well. Just a heads up. If you’re not a fan of using honey in the winter, this may not be the best choice.
Honey is a humectant, which is great for warmer temps because it draws moisture from the air, but does the opposite in the winter and can dry your hair out. This was not my first choice of products, but hey…. it was the best setting product I had on hand. Fortunately honey is the 5th ingredient so there’s not too much of it in the product.
Step 3: Tuck The Rest of Your Hair Away
What you do next depends on your plans and lifestyle. If you are planning to take the beanie off in public, you’ll probably want to rod your entire head.
However, if this is a quick, weekend ‘do or you work from home like me, you may be able to quickly tuck away the rest of your hair since it will be hidden inside the beanie.
If you’re tucking it away, just put it into a low puff or twists. I put mine in large twists and called it a day.
Step 4: Dry and Fluff
Once your hair is dry (I slept in my rods), simply remove the rods, separate to your liking, fluff and go!
Step 5: Protect Your Hair
I would recommend adding a silk bonnet or plastic cap underneath the beanie to protect your hair from dryness and snagging from the material.
Step 6: Add Your Beanie and Go!
Now you’ve got a fun, weekend style that’s easy to do. Enjoy!
Where to Buy Beanies
I normally get mine from Forever 21, Amazon, Gap, Ross, Target, Etsy or any of the stores that sell accessories.

You can use curl enhancing creams and products like Kinky Curly Curling Custard or Eco Styler on wet hair. You can also buy small rods. Those last the longest.

Hi i just wont to say thank you for your site. Years ago i went natural but did not do my research and in a years time i had very little growth and went back to relaxers bad decision. I started my transitioning on 11/17/13 i just ordered and received my transitioning kit with carols daughter. I also got some Cantu leave in conditioner. Now do i need to put the conditioner in my hair everyday. I did a rod set and it stayed for about 2days. I also do bantu knots and the samething are there any styles i can do that will last at least a week or close to it.
