Hi Lisa,
I just happened to stumble across your blog and I’m glad I did! I have a couple of questions…I have been natural my entire life but when i was about 16 i started using flat irons to straighten my hair now im 22, right now my hair is shoulder length.Long term i would rather wear my hair in its natural curly/coily state so my question is1) Can a person with “processed” (ive only flat ironed my hair)hair go completely natural even though they are natural?is it possible for me to transition?…I want to go completely heatless 2) do you have any tips for someone in my position? … Right now when I was my hair it shrinks down into a coil/curly situation when it is in this state 3) does that help with length when its wet (moisturized)? …Thank you so much for all your advice-Hairinista

Thank you very much Lisa. I live in the Caribbean and I have decided to go natural. I saw a lot of websites that were good but I felt daunted-not knowing where to begin. I spent some time looking at your clips and the advice given has helped me to feel that though the journey would be long that it’s doable and not going to cost an ‘arm and leg’ by way of initial costs in products. Main thing for me is being disciplined, knowing that it is worth it. Thanks again for being real. Take care…bye.

I have not had an relaxer since september, but my hair is short and thin. My hair is course and need to know how can I soften it to start styling it. I am wearing a puff ponytail now and will get braids to leave my hair alone for a while and suggestions. Need help with moisturizing.

Hello!! I have recently decided on becoming natural. My hair is really course and I have been using no sulfate shampoos. My questions are: 1) Have you ever used “twisted sistas” products? 2) What styles are best while I am transitioning?
Thanks again!!
P.S. Your website is the BOMB-diggetty!!

Hey AllLady
Thank you! Never used their products but I have a whole section on Transitioning hairstyles under the “Hairstyles” tab up top. For me, I found that styles that require low manipulation and no heat like rod sets, pin ups, flat twists, worked the best for me.

Hey, did I see s(Y)mone’s pic? Love your puff look. I’m still hanging in there but my “naps” are driving me crazy. No sheen! What to do???
lisa says
Hey neenoc,
No, but I know the pic you’re talking about. The one with the braids? Yeah we do resemble in that pic.
1) Are you washing with no sulfate shampoos? I use Giovanni. It’s normally $8 but you can get it for $5 at Walmart. No sulfates really helps lock moisture in and keeps hair from drying out.
2) Try a deep conditioner and leave it on your hair for at least an hour with a plastic cap. Sit under the dryer with a plastic cap for 30 minutes of that hour. I use Olive Oil replenisher. You can get it at any beauty supply store.
3) Try pre-pooing your hair with olive oil. Leave it on your hair for 1-2 hours with a plastic cap before shampooing.

Lisa, the puff really looks good. You did a great job for the first time. Think of how it will look with experience. I love the little comments that you make while working with your hair. Keep up the good work.
