You are about to discover how to infuse your hair with moisture AND make your wash and go’s look better without taking two hours to shingle product through your hair!
I don’t know about you, but I have never been a big fan of WnG’s on my hair. I always had to use half the jar of gel and my hair ended up feeling crunchy with white residue galore.
Ew!
So I gave up on the style. Too much time and effort for cakey, shrunken hair.
Even if you are not a fan of WnGs, stick around. The max hydration method described below can be done with a twist out instead of a wash and go.
Hellooooo Maximum Hydration Method! Where Have You Been All My Life????
I first read about The Maximum Hydration Method on Pinke Cube’s site and discovered that the reason my hair didn’t like WnG’s was because it was too dry.
You may think you are moisturizing your hair enough, but if you’re using lots of sulfates, “cones” (products that have ingredients ending in -cone) or not applying water-based moisturizers enough, your hair could be thirsty.
There’s a whole lot of science behind why the method works (and you really should ONLY use the recommended products), but the bottom line is…
When your hair doesn’t have enough moisture, it shrinks up more and needs more product to stay moisturized.
So when your hair is fully hydrated, the opposite happens.
You’ll also have stronger hair, fewer tangles and your natural pattern will come out.
See the steps below…
5 Steps to Max Hydration
Don’t get too discouraged by this, but you’re really supposed to do this for 7 days in a row the very first time you do it. The idea is to get your hair to its maximum hydration level.
After it reaches that, you can do it every few days.
I only did it for 3 days total and I didn’t do it daily. I did the 5 steps every OTHER day.
And even though I didn’t do it 7 days straight as suggested, I still got great results! One day I may try 7 days consecutively.
For Best Results…
If you really want elongated, defined curls not only should you do this daily for the first 7 days, BUT you need to section your hair and saturate your strands from root to tip to make sure every strand is coated.
I admittedly didn’t saturate every strand so that’s probably why my hair is poofier than it could be. But I’m OK with that. I actually like a fuller, fro look.
******** IMPORTANT *********
For the first day, it’s recommended you do the Cherry Lola Treatment (CLT) instead of step 1 below. It’s a protein treatment that also helps moisturize your hair. You mix…
- 16 oz. of full-fat, plain yogurt
- 2 tbsp of baking soda
- 2 tbsp liquid aminos (found in soy sauce aisle of health food store)
PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE NOTE! Baking soda is known to have a relaxing effect on the hair and could loosen your curl pattern temporarily. So please be careful or use a very small amount if you are concerned about this. You have been warned.
Apply mixture to your hair and let it sit for 30 minutes under a plastic cap and rinse. Then proceed to step 2 below. The remaining days do steps 1-5. The CLT should not be done more than every two weeks.
I would highly recommend sectioning your hair into at least 4 sections and keeping it that way. Your hair will be so much easier to work with. And as your hair becomes more hydrated, the process gets faster because there are fewer tangles and your hair is softer.
Step 1) Clarify your hair with a mixture of 1-3 tablespoons of baking soda, water and 1 to 3.5 oz. of silicon-free, natural conditioner.
The first time I did the method I used TRESsemme Naturals Nourishing Moisture Conditioner with Aloe and Avocado, but now I use Knot Today.
If your hair is fairly clean or sensitive to baking soda, limit the amount you use.
You can also use a 1:1 ratio of apple cider vinegar (the Braggs brand is great) and water. I didn’t try this option. I always use conditioner and baking soda.
Section your hair in at least 4 sections and add the mixture to your hair from root to tip. Leave on for 15 minutes and rinse out with warm water.
This step helps clean your hair (baking soda or apple cider vinegar) without stripping it of moisture (conditioner adds moisture).
Here’s my hair after applying the baking soda/water/conditioner solution.
Step 2) Warm the silicon-free, moisturizing conditioner like Knot Today in the microwave for 10 seconds. (Do not put the bottle in the microwave. Put it in a microwave-safe container and heat it that way.)
Apply to wet hair in sections and let sit under a plastic cap for 15-20 minutes.
You can also apply room-temp conditioner, wear a plastic cap, wrap up your hair in a silk scarf and sleep with conditioner overnight.
It’s actually best to let it sit overnight and I do notice better results when I do this, but if you are in a hurry, the heated option works too.
Rinse out. Detangle in the shower while rinsing (preferably with your fingers).
Step 3) Mix one cup of Bentonite Clay powder (buy at health store or online) and 2-3 cups of warm water or aloe vera juice. (Feel free to add a tablespoon of honey and olive oil for extra moisture.) The consistency should be slightly thinner than yogurt. Add more clay or water/aloe vera juice as needed.
Make sure the water is warm or your clay won’t dissolve.
Apply to wet hair in sections and very carefully with a towel handy (because it’s very messy). Be sure to lift up sections of your hair and distribute clay from root to tip.
The clay is detoxifying your hair and prepping it to absorb and retain moisture.
Rinse clay with warm water. Be sure it’s completely rinsed out or your hair will get dry.
Step 4) While your hair is soaking wet (and I do mean soaking wet), apply a silicon-free conditioner one section at a time. I prefer Knot Today.
If you are doing a wash and go, rinse your hair for a quick second (literally) under the shower after applying.
Step 5) Immediately apply a botanical gel on soaking wet hair. I use Kinky Curly Curly Custard (buy at Target or online). Do NOT use gel with protein like Eco Styler. It should be a botanical gel. Goddess Curls (by Curls) is another and you can also use flaxseed gel. (See my homemade recipe for the flaxseed gel here.)
The wetter your hair is when applying, the better the product will dissolve and not leave that residue.
I would NOT recommend waiting until you are out of the shower. Apply the gel IMMEDIATELY.
You can shingle it through small sections if you want for extreme definition, but I just apply generously by raking through each section one or two time. This is best for a fuller look.
It takes me 5 minutes total to apply the 2 products. Yes, those days of shingling are over.
Let hair air dry. To speed up the drying process wring excess water with a T-shirt by gently squeezing the hair (towel makes hair frizzy). Shake head in shower or over tub to get even more excess water out.
If you see residue, you either did one or more of the following…
- You used too much gel (as your hair gets hydrated you need less).
- You didn’t ensure your hair was soaking wet when you applied the gel
- You didn’t smooth gel through your hair
If you don’t like gel, you can apply a natural oil if you wish. You just won’t have the definition. You can also twist your hair and do a twist out if you wish.
You may not notice a big difference in your hair after the first treatment. But you will definitely see a difference by the 3rd day.
Here’s my wet hair after step five…
What Happens When You Stop The Method?
To get the best results, you should do the method consistently until your hair reaches max hydration. You will know because your hair will have definition from root to tip when your hair is product free.
After that, you should do all steps every 3-4 days to keep your hair hydrated.
I never did the method until I reached max hydration. I was happy with the results after 3 days. Plus, baking soda can alter your texture (loosen curls) and I didn’t want that to happen.
Afterwards I started doing the method every 4 days for about a week and a half. Then I would do some of the steps every 3-4 days.
For example, I would only do steps 1, 4 and 5 (skipping the deep conditioning overnight and the clay). My hair still looked great but not quite as stretched.
The pic on the right is my hair after only doing steps 1, 4 and 5. Notice my curls are still very clumped and defined, but my hair is more shrunken than the above pics (less hydration).
Also remember, I never take time to shingle the gel through every strand. (Ain’t nobody got time for that!) 🙂 I literally just smooth it through one section at a time.
So my curls are not even as defined as they could be. But I like a fuller look.
So you don’t have to do the full method everyday to get good results. But even if I don’t do all 5 steps, I still do steps 1, 4 and 5 to maintain some degree of hydration.
Since I started the method, I have not gone more than 4 days without washing my hair. This is ideal since your hair can get tangled with wash and go’s.
Got Questions?
I’ve started a maximum hydration thread in the forums.
For complete details on the method and product alternatives for the various steps, see the site that taught and inspired me.

What is a recommended cowash product to clean my hair? I did the treatment 7 days and am pleased. People think I have a jheri curl. I would like to color with henna what are your ideas on when to color? Will baking soda strip the dye
Cynthia says
Can you answer jeannies question please I would like to know also..
lisa says
I don’t use cowash products much so I can’t offer much info, sorry. I also don’t dye my hair so hopefully someone else will come along to answer.
Kelly H says
Hey. I’m going to do this next week but I was wondering did the shampoo and conditioner have to be all natural? I use carols daughter products and they’re silicon free but not all natural.
lisa says
I don’t always use all natural products but I do when I can. So it’s not a requirement.
Michelle says
I just started this method. As I was mixing my CL treatment, I realized that my yogurt was NON FAT.. ugh! so to compensate for the missing fat, I added an egg to the mix. I hope that was ok. I am letting step 2 (conditioner) stay in my hair overnight……
Tiffany says
I was thinking about adding an egg to mine the last time I did it!!!
The ONLY full fat plain yogurt that I have found, to date, is FAGE TOTAL.

Hello Lisa
I submitted a post on May 29th, 2016 and can’t seem to find it. I actually saw it shortly after I submitted it and started reading replies but did not have a chance to finish. Could you please tell me where I can find it?
Thank you for your advice and help!

Hi Lisa
I was jjst browsing aroung and saw.your page. I am Jamaican. Born, raised and still living on this beautiful island. The weather here is always warm and the type of work I do has me in the sun 8 hrs or more in the sun plus I have to wear a hat which is apart of my work uniform. The hat brings ALOT of heat to my hair plus I sweat alot in my head. I get frustrated as I try to keep my hair moisterised as much as possible but it feels and sounds like you are walking on dry leaves. I did the purosity test and I am assume it’s low as the strand has been floating for the past 45mins. The question to you is should I do the max hydration or should apply the products you recommended for the low purosity hair type?
carrie parks says
My question is do I wash my hair prior to using the yogurt, baking soda and amino acids?
lisa says
No, you don’t. Do it before.
Holly says
Thank you soooo much for this info. I am excited to try this for my 6 yo. She loves to wear her “Annie” hair but it gets so dry and tangled and then her dad complains about taking her out looking like that. I explain that it is HER hair and she should have some say. I still twist or braid it many days but try to let her wear it down 1-2 days per week. This may be just what we need to let her wear it down more often. I’m excited to give it a try if she is willing to put in the time.
So how about yogurt, peanut butter and baking soda. Then follow with ACV rinse. Then condition and moisturize?? Is that too much??
Thanks again! Holly (& Samantha)
lisa says
I honestly don’t know about peanut butter. Is that for protein? Why not egg yolk?

Hi ladies,
I’ve been using Bragg’s apple cider vinegar, aloe vera juice (not gel) Indian clay mask, and water for a couple of years. I love it because it makes the curls pop. The only issue is that it’s best to shingle it for the first two times you do it. The first time I did the treatment, I had to do it two weeks in a row to see the maximum results, after that I was on my way. I can go about 4-6 weeks in between treatments before I see my curls craving love. Then I repeat the process, except I don’t shingle it unless I see less definition and the curls rebelling. Definitely make sure you use a good conditioner immediately following the process. I personally do not sleep with the clay mask in, as it can dry the hair out. BTW, you can also use the same mixture of the clay mask as a face mask. I live in a really dry climate so my hair is extremely dry and unruly!! Fight the fight ladies. Time and patience are key and stay away from combs, brushes, and HEAT, as they will defeat your purpose. If you really can’t manipulate the hair without the hair tools, do what you must. Take care.
Cynthia Carr says
Thank you
Lena says
This method works but it’s not practical unless you live in a warm climate where you can go out with a wet head or you have short hair that dries quickly. If I did steps 1, 4 and 5 daily I’d have a permanently wet head! (My hair is just shy of type 4 so maybe it’s different with different textures).
Also, I’ve read so much about baking soda stripping people’s hair – how is it part of this regimen? I did the cherry lola treatment on day one but I think I will stick with ACV from now on.
The method works but overall it is just too involved a process if you want to have a life that includes things other than your hair.
lisa says
I will have to somewhat agree. That’s why I could only do the max hydration method for 3 days straight. Beyond that it was just too much work and I have a good amount of hair. People I know who do it every 7 days usually have very short hair.
Yes, that’s why I put that bold disclaimer about baking soda in the article.
Rene says
Do you have to follow all the steps on the same day for 7 days?
Rene says
Just seem like a lot in a day
lisa says
Chile, it is. It’s why I only did it for 3 days.
Shar says
How I knew this method was real:
I cant remember the last time I was able to finger-comb my hair comfortably. The Cherry Lola treatment made me wish I found out about it sooner. As I was distributing conditioner and baking soda into my strands from step 1, I noticed several well-defined curls hit the back of my neck, curls I have never seen before and I’ve been natural for 5 years. Thank you so much for sharing!
Nishi says
I’m starting to love my hair, I’m on day 4 but curls are showing , so I would like to ask u a quick question, if I complet my 7 days, do I keep doing the procedure or I keep adding gel? What about if I decide to wash my hair how can I do it Cz I Dnt wanna my hair curls to go away
Janice says
I have done the 7 days now it is a month later! I have curls but they are still not all well defined. Every night I do step one which is the ACV or the baking soda with honey and olive oil wash it out after 15-30 minutes and put the conditioner on and sleep with a cap on my head. I use a plastic cap and a deep conditioning cap I bought from Sally’s Beauty supply (it looks silver) in the morning I take the cap off and I just gel and go. I am home today and decided last night to just rinse the conditioner out and put the clay on afterward and I slept with the clay on the hair all night….this morning I rinsed the clay out and place the conditioner all over the hair and the hair has dried without any frizz. And no gel was used.
coilycuebelle says
Thank you for this article about using baking soda. For quite a few months I have been using baking soda, apple cider vinegar, a good sulfate/paraben free conditioner and Jamaican castor oil mixture as my no poo. I have type 3C hair, and I’m telling you, there is nothing better for my hair. It makes my hair so clean and healthy and my curls love it! Followed up with a good conditioner, it works better than any pre-made no poo I have ever used.
Simone says
I also asked this on the forum but if you do the knot today overnight does it lengthen the suggested time frame for the method. i.e. will out take 14 days to complete the 7 day regimine? Also how often should this be done & what is a good daily moisturizing routine after this?
lisa says
No not really. I don’t think that matters. I find that the gel holds the moisture in my hair for days and I don’t really need to moisturize until wash day. But any water-based, daily moisturizer will work. It’s hard to suggest specific moisturizers because everyone’s hair responds differently.
Tarra says
Hello I see so many wonderful things people are doing to their natural hair. I’m four months without a relaxer and my hair is falling out like crazy and it’s getting really nappy. My hair was past my shoulders and now it’s really short. I don’t know what to do and I’m getting scared and impatient with my hair I want to relax it again but I want to know what I need to do ASAP. If someone can help me please. Please email me or comment here. Thank you

Hi there!
I am so sorry to hear that you’ve been having trouble with your transitioning journey.
Let me star off by saying: hang in there! Everyone used to tell me when I first went natural: “It’s a journey, be patient.” But all I wanted was to have popping long girls. Over the years (3 to be exact), I have learned what they meant and I think that you will too. There will be set backs and some bumps on the road: that’s ok. You must learn from each one of them and just really try to learn what YOUR hair likes and needs.
I opted for a big chop so I am sorry if this reply is a little vague. I would say to try transitional braids (while making sure to nourish your hair) and trying to keep it moisturized.
Again, sorry for the vague long post, but just hang in there, and try to focus on being curious about what your hair will look like once you give it the proper moisture and TLC.
Cheers!
Monique L Sanders says
When transitioning and basically all the timemake sure you moisturize moisturize moisturize. Research demarcation line on transitioning hair, it is very fragile. AVOID HEAT! Lastly, protective styles are important.
I got frustrated with the two different textures and ended up doing the Big Chop after about 4 months.
lisa says
That’s right Monique. I cannot emphasize the importance of moisture….especially in that transition phase b/c the hair is so delicate anyway. Great tips.
Ayana Bando says
I have to agree. I don’t want to chop it and it’s definitely been breaking in the back which is frustrating. The Cherry Lola treatment and the moisture treatment have been God send! Even on my daughters natural hair one Cherry Lola treatment has worked wonders. Stick with it! Its so worth it!

I happened across this last week and went straight to work…
Admittedly, the baking soda scared me (I know my hair doesn’t do well with baking soda). As a result, I made a few tiny modifications.
Wow.
Game changer!!
And I swear I have been getting compliments on my hair every single day. That has NEVER happened!
Here is my modified version:
-Wild Growth Hair Oil 30 minutes before shower- saturating all of my hair (4 sections)
*I want to sleep with it in my hair overnight for more moisture, but haven’t.
– Shampoo (I use a moisturizing shampoo) w/ 8 drops of peppermint oil added (I like the tingle!)
– Rinse
– Deep conditioner (I use Nexxus Humectrus) w/ heaping teaspoon of Healing Clay (I just eyeball a little mound of the clay in the palm of my hand and mix the conditioner in, while standing in the shower). After I have all that on my hair, I add more conditioner (you’ll know if you need more just by feel).
– Wait 3 minutes
– Rinse
– Condition without clay (I put it in and rinse immediately)
– Gel, etc (per your instructions… while in the shower…!!)
Wow.
A hundred thank you’s!! Everyone wants to know what I’m doing differently with my hair now! Who would have thought putting clay in would help deep condition it!?
I love you!!
lisa says
Thank you for sharing your modified version. I’m so glad you are loving your hair and the results!

Thanks for this website. I needed it desparately. Hair was sooooo dry. My hair is a little bigger than a TWA. Had the big chop done last September. Completed day one of the regime today. There is noticeable difference…….some poppin of curls…YAY!!! I have a quick question. Do you use any product on your hair in between doing the MHM?

hello, I am sooo excited to try this. My question is in step 4 how long do i keep the conditioner in for
lisa says
About 15-20 min or so.
Alasaya Hawkins says
Do you have to be natural already before you do this method. Bc I got a perm (Untra Sheen Supreme) about 2-3 weeks ago I have straight hair now but about 3-4 years ago I was natural until I got a textureizer & my hair broke out really bad . I want to go natural with out doing the “Big Chop” I want to have healthier hair and curly!!
lisa says
No, not really. But for the wash and go part (steps 4 and 5) you’d have to style your hair differently.
Alasaya Hawkins says
I don’t understand what you mean by that . By me having straight hair will I be able to use the max hydration method ?
lisa says
Yes but what I mean is you can’t do a wash and go with gel (last 2 steps) because you don’t have straight hair. Your hair won’t curl. So you’ll have to do another styling step like a rod set, etc.
lisa says
Edit: Oops I mean “because you have straight hair”
Dee Felix says
Hello Lisa! Happy New Year. 🙂
Just for the sake of clarity, the steps you shared are one-a-day–right? For example, I do step one on Monday, step two on Tuesday, etc.? Did I interpret your instructions correctly?
Thank you so much!
Dee
lisa says
Hi Dee, no you do them altogether in the same day. Sometimes I do the first two steps one day and do the leave-in step (#2) overnight and finish the next day.
Yolanda says
All my research showed that baking soda is a no no no for its long term effects. Can it just be removed from the process?
Angie says
Yes. I use Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar w/water to clarify (vs baking soda). Also use it to mix w/the clay powder. Works great, dame results.

Hi, I am on my second attempt to get through 7 days straight with this method. The first time I only lasted 2 days. I am presently on day 2. I live in a hot climate so by mid day my hair is DRY!!!!! Not crunchy and still soft but dry. What can I do? Oh I should probably mention that I lightly finger some oil (olive or argon) on my hair after I apply the gel and shake out the excess over the tub (great tip by the way) but that didn’t seem to stop my hair from drying out either. My hair is normally very dry but will this ever get to the point where it will stay moist and have that wet look all day and be product free?
Alaishia Pressley says
I appreciate this method however, is there an alternative to your products because I can’t really afford some of the products found in your hydration method.

Ohmigawwwsh! I had fantastic results after just ONE day! I have a little bit longer than TWA after being chemical free for almost two years., but found the reason I can’t get those cool curly looks from twist out or WnG is because I have 4b and 4c hair. Didn’t matter what products I used. After stumbling into the MHT on this site- EUREKA! I have some curls! I was almost giddy! Now, I think I am going to try to grow my hair out with this treatment at hand to help me. Thank you so much for posting it on a clearly understandable way for hairstyling-challenged folks like myself! And to think my EX stylist wanted to put a texturiser only hair…pfffft!

I use henna to cover my grey. You will need to do your heen first… The henna will turn your hair reddish… After I wash the henna out. I use 4oz of Indigo and 2 oz of alma. I boiled distilled water in a cast iron pot and added the cheapest black tea bags I could find.
Use henna as instructed/mix with brewed black tea instead of water 5x bags of tea 2 cups of boiled distilled water
Mix indigo and amla with hot brewed tea 4 to 6 tea bags boiled
after rinsing out henna, towel dry hair and apply indigo/amla I leave this on 24 hours..(yes it is messy)
If the gery is not covered do the indigo/amla process again. Add a few drops peppermint, or tea tree oil for soothing scalp.
Cynthia says
I completed this process 3 days in a row. I did not notice a difference, ( I thought) but later, I noticed my curls were better, and I could sleep in a bonnet, without twisting my hair every night. I am so over joyed. I really thought it didn’t work… IT REALLY WORKED. I am going to do it again this weekend.

Excellent!!

Wow these are a lot of steps but the results are amazing!! I’m new to natural hair after just finishing my transition a few months ago. I’ve noticed that my hair looks dull despite how much I moisturize it. I can’t wait to try this and see the results.

I am a bit confused. Do you do all steps in a day and repeat daily for 7 days? Step 2 says overnight…how do I do that overnight with the other steps involved?
lisa says
You can but some people do steps one and two on day (they sleep with the knot today conditioner) and then do the rest the next day.

Can I use the curls goddess curl botanical gel for the gel step

Hello [= I am completely new to natural hair…After months and months of reading & youtube videos, I have found that my hair is 4c. I made the decision to go natural because of dealing with alopecia since the age of 4; not due to traction or anything, I suppose it’s just genetic, sadly.. I’ve been trying to find women who know what it’s like to deal with the same issue..I’m 24 now, & I’m still afraid to get shots to see if they help..]’= But I have made the decision to try to try to remain consistent in caring for my health and therefore my hair. I am looking forward to trying this method. [= I did want to post a link, though. I want to follow the method to a T to get the best results, so I will try to get the same products to see if they work for me. When I clicked the link for the kinky curly conditioner I found that it’s $30+ on amazon, but in looking for it elsewhere I found it at target for -$12! http://www.target.com/p/kinky-curly-knot-today-leave-in-conditioner-detangler-8-oz/-/A-13044269?lnk=rec|pdp|viewed_bought|pdph1 Just wanted to share. Thanks so much for this post!! <3

This is great information. Thanks to your method of determining porosity, I determined that I have high porosity hair. Is the CLT method ok for high porosity hair? I saw someone mention on another site that it was only good for people whose hair is low porosity.
lisa says
Hi Carla
I’m not 100% sure about that but I can see how that could be since high porosity hair may have trouble retaining the moisture. It would just pass right through instead of absorbing it.

hi, is this helpfull for straight and chemically treated hairs?

Just wanted to thank you for listing the MHM so clearly. I’m on day two and already experiencing great results. The Fourth of July heat tore my natural hair up. Found this page this past weekend and I’m better defined but the best part is that I’m not tangling like I was only DAYS ago! That is amazing for me.
Thank you and all of the ladies that have posted about the care of our natural hair. You sisters are amazing.

I’m so happy you are loving the treatment!

Hi,
I really admire that you took the time to help us people with african american hair look better.
I am fairly young and I’m not sure my hair has matured fully yet, if it hasn’t would doing this treatment mess with my hair pattern or would it improve it?
Thanks, Aminata

Doing the method would improve your texture as all the method is doing is improving your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture. Here are some examples:
